British government has added eleven more countries to its travel alert roster about the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Just last month, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after multiple serious cases such as the tragic demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic chemical often employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Travellers

Authorities representative a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While having drinks overseas, choose trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister said.

"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."

The complete roster of destinations listed as presenting a danger of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
