Adolescent Found Dead Following False Accusations of Taking Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead just days following being falsely accused of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's parents found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a testimony presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from police later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged stolen remains generated online comments, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from school staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's parents' landline and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not got that message.
Formal Conclusion
Senior investigator informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
